What changed with the Héroes del Chaco bridge?

The bridge opened to traffic on March 4, 2024 and connects Asunción with Chaco'i in the Villa Hayes district, with two lanes each way, a bike lane and a walkway. It gives the capital a direct link to the Chaco side of the river and the route to Puerto Falcón. Chaco'i was among the flooded barrios in 2016, so flood risk still has to be checked lot by lot.

Presidente Hayes is the Lower Chaco (Bajo Chaco) departamento across the Paraguay River from Asunción, with 123,313 residents in the 2022 census and Villa Hayes, about 30 km from Asunción, as its capital. The governor said in December 2025 that Villa Hayes' economy rests on industry, including the Yguazú cement plant (750,000 tonnes a year and about 350 direct jobs), the Victoria meatpacking plant (220 direct jobs) and two shipyards. The Puente Héroes del Chaco, opened in March 2024, connects Asunción directly with Chaco'i in the Villa Hayes district.

Building in Presidente Hayes: What to Know

Much of the Bajo Chaco is flat, low land where the Paraguay and Pilcomayo rivers meet, with slow winding rivers and swamps, and low ground floods in the rainy season (La Nación, 2024). In January 2016 more than 2,000 families in Villa Hayes left their homes during flooding, with barrios Alonso, Beterete Cué and Chaco'i among the worst hit. Why Investors Build in Presidente Hayes

Proximity to Asunción is the main draw: the Héroes del Chaco bridge (a 603 m cable-stayed span plus access viaducts and a 4.8 km road section) opened in March 2024 and links the capital to the route toward Puerto Falcón. The governor also cited a 500 kV transmission line operating in Villa Hayes, which directly employs about 270 people and is a draw for industries that need large power capacity (La Nación, December 2025). The district is also linked to the eastern region by the Puente Remanso and to Concepción by the Puente de la Concordia.
