Hohenau Today

Hohenau dates its founding to 14 March 1900, when the first group of settler families arrived, which makes it the oldest of the Colonias Unidas with Obligado and Bella Vista. It became a district in 1944 and covers 220 km², with an economy based on soy, wheat, livestock and commerce. It is known as the capital of immigrants, and its Fiesta de las Colectividades features ten communities, from Paraguay and Germany to Japan and Ukraine. In October 2024 Congress passed a law transferring 20 hectares of state land to the municipality for the Pradera Alta industrial park.

A wave of mainly German immigrants, along with Russians, Ukrainians, Belgians and Poles, has settled in the Colonias Unidas since the Covid-19 pandemic. Newcomers founded the Los Pioneros neighborhood in Hohenau, and in April 2026 Última Hora reported new neighborhoods such as barrio Esperanza built on land the newcomers bought, with residents saying rents and the cost of living had risen considerably. A private school for 72 pupils, preschool to sixth grade, opened in Los Pioneros in May 2025; it first served immigrant children and now admits any family, with classes in Spanish.
